How to Get Out of Conversations
Five Subtle Tricks to Get Out of a Conversation
We’ve all been stuck in seemingly never-ending conversations that we wish would end. Here are five different techniques for you to choose from (based on your comfort level) the next time you need to get out of a conversation as quickly and politely as possible. Remember, each technique is situational!
Person in Distance. During the conversation, act as though you see someone you know in the distance that you need to catch before they leave. Avert your eyes, make a surprised face, and walk towards the “person.” Try not to walk in a straight line - weave in and out of people. *This only works if you’re in a crowded area.
The Helper. Find someone close to where you are who looks like they could use an extra hand - help carry something, help direct someone somewhere, etc. Disrupt the conversation you’re having and explain that someone needs your attention. This technique not only makes you look like a good person, but you really are being kind and helping someone out.
The Deadline. If you’re being held up in a conversation with someone (a coworker, for example) tell them that you have a tight deadline that you need to get back to as soon as possible. Keep it simple and keep it short! Make sure to keep your voice a little higher and kinder, and maintain a happy facial expression.*This is generally most helpful in work scenarios, but you can adjust it based on the situation you’re in.
The Ally. For this technique, you need to have someone (a friend/family member/etc.) who will be able to tell if you want to get out of a conversation. When this happens, give them a specific look or use body language that indicates you need their help - have them come over to disrupt the conversation and say they need you for something.
The Fake Call. You need to do some planning ahead for this technique. Set an alarm on your phone that has the same chime as your ringtone for around the time you think you’ll be in the conversation you want to avoid. Then, once the alarm goes off, act as though you’re getting a call that you need to take. Make sure you keep the screen hidden from the person you’re in conversation with so you don’t get caught. Remember to indicate that the “call” is something urgent that you can’t ignore (a doctor, a family member, a boss/coworker, etc.)
