How To Make Polite Excuses
There are situations that being polite and having manners is necessary. Which I know is funny to say now since I did not give this advice first. But its easy to slide too much on being polite that people think they can change your mind.
Polite Sandwich
This is simple in how to deliver. You start off with something polite first, what you cannot do, then a small compliment. “Please let me know when… Sorry I cannot make it…. thanks for your understanding”. or “I’m sorry that doesn’t fit in my schedule… thanks for thinking of me… how about I help with the next event when you know?”
But Keep It Short
You do not have to give an explanation. Just saying you do not have the time is all anyone really needs. You do not need to give a whole story. People should respect what you say first. And do not feel guilty about not being able to help.
Be So Sweet It Makes Their Teeth Hurt
Be so nice and sweet that it starts making people uncomfortable if they keep asking you. Especially if other people are around. You are being so gracious, but not exactly sorry. “Thank you for thinking of me.” “That’s kind of you to offer.” “I’m glad you would trust me with this.”
