Things All Introverts Do

As an introvert, I know that there are certain things that all introverts do. Though it may seem odd or funny to others, it is not so for introverts because we know what is going on in our heads. Not everyone would notice us doing these things or understand it either. But for introverts, it’s normal.

Check out these 4 things that all introverts do:

  • Hide from People

Since we like to be left alone and value our privacy, we hide from people. Now, not everyone does it out in public or at a party. There are different scenarios, but many ways in which we hide. For example, when we're out we will often change directions just to avoid someone we know, so that we don't have to talk to them. I may turn a corner, partially stop and look at the display in a window nearby till the person walks past. Or if I'm at the mall, I'll just walk inside a store and meander there for some time till the known person is out of sight. Even when driving, if an introvert sees someone they know or just a crowd of people, they may drive past their destination to some other place and then later come back.

  • Don’t Like Answering the Phone

We don't really like answering the phone. So if you actually call me and I pick up all the time, that means you're special to me. Sometimes, I do receive calls from unknown people because it's a business thing or maybe for a doctor’s appointment. So, I only have three friends whose calls I will always pick up, besides my mom, a few aunts and cousins. But if we introverts can text you, or message you, or email you, we will do that over making a call. Yes, we will literally exhaust every other avenue of communication before having to call.

  • Happy with Canceled Plans

Plans happen. But introverts don’t exactly enjoy being a part of that whole thing – getting up and ready, wearing an appropriate outfit and carrying stuff like food and camera. But when it gets canceled, they are actually happy. I’ve been in that place. Yes, I have been a bit annoyed that the plan didn’t work as there was a lot of preparation to get to that point for me to go somewhere. But at the end of the day, I’m happy it’s canceled. And the best part is that it’s not my fault. For introverts, we’re the ones not saying “yes” to going out all the time either because it’s not a good day or we’re not feeling well. But because we’re the ones who are sometimes canceling, we don’t feel so good. But when a plan gets canceled, we are guild-tree as we fulfilled our obligations but still didn’t have to go. So, that’s awesome.

  • Pretend To Be Distracted

To avoid a person, introverts often pretend to be distracted. For instance, we will be intent on listening on our headphones, or have our head buried in a book or newspaper. Our face will not be quite recognizable. I know because I’ve done this so many times. Sometimes, I’ll say that I have an incoming call and need to attend to it. But it’s a lie. I generally don’t answer phones. But we’ll do anything to look distracted – rummaging through the bag to act like we’re looking for something or scrutinizing the grocery cart with great focus.

It’s understandable that you're curious. But I don't always want to be helpful. And yes, I know that I am not really a nice person about that. However, as an introvert I can give you quick answers to something I know but am not really the type to engage in a lengthy conversation.

So there you go – the four things that all introverts do at one point or another in their lives, to avoid interacting with people out in the world.
