Being a Mermaid: Interview with Che
Who hasn’t dremt of being a mermaid at least once?
Che has had a long and interesting road to get to where she is with the Fat Mermaid Society. With her love of The Little Mermaid and being a water baby, to creating her own costumes. She started the Fat Society of Mermaids first as a clothing line.
Growing up as a young black girl her mom wouldn't really buy princess stuff because she wanted any images that she had to reflect her and there weren't a lot of like princesses and fantasy characters that looked like her. Just really, racially let's not even talk about body shape.
They launched with just seven mermaids that represented different plus sized body shapes. their original seven sirens, they're all fat or plus size or curvy or thick.
But she has been lucky in her communities that she has been a part of. Being so open and accepting to newer people (who weren’t usually apart of that community before) and willing to learn. That there is always a place for you wherever or whatever you decide. Not having to stay in one if you do not feel comfortable.
