5 Ways to Embrace Your Weird

We all have unique things about us that can sometimes make us feel disconnected or too “out there” for those around us. These things might come in the form of hobbies, belief systems, values, etc. It’s important to remember that we all have our “things” that make us feel different, but it’s important to embrace them, because at the end of the day, they make us who we are. Here are five tips to help you embrace your weird:

  1. There will always be someone who connects with you on something. There are so many different ways to connect with others, and even if it’s not in person, you’ll certainly be able to find it via podcasts, social media groups, online forums, etc. Even if it takes a little time and effort to find that connection, don’t doubt that it’s out there in one way or another!

  2. Work through your fear and shame. Our society is filled with tons of social constructs that can make us feel too weird or wrong in our preferences, hobbies, etc. It’s on us to deal with that shame and work through it so we can stay true to ourselves and do the things that make us happy without worrying about others’ opinions.

  3. Not everything is so extreme. A lot of the time, we feel like the things we do or believe are so out there and different/weird from the rest of society, when in reality that’s really not the case. The majority of people fall within the same general categories of beliefs/values/hobbies/etc., however we all have slight differences and variances within those categories - and that’s totally okay!

  4. You are a whole person on your own. Everything that you are and that you do makes you a whole person - you don’t need another person (i.e. a romantic partner) to make you whole. There’s nothing inherently missing from your life, even if you feel lonely sometimes.

Work on yourself, because you’re stuck with you for the rest of your life. Everything that you do and believe will be with you forever, so it’s important to embrace who you are and continue to try to grow yourself into the best person you can be so you find happiness and joy in your life and the things that you do.
